THE FAREWELLl PROCESSION
Emotional culmination of the great pilgrimages that take place in Cova da Iria, the Farewell Procession manifests the anticipated yearning and, above all, the renewed hope that each believer, transformed in their innermost by the experience of the pilgrimage, carries with them when leaving Fatima for their places of origin.
Accompanying the path of the image of the Virgin of Fatima between the Presbytery of the Prayer Area and the Chapel of the Apparitions with songs and the waving of white handkerchiefs, the pilgrims, although standing still, walk together as the Church, transforming the Cova da Iria into a huge procession.
The white handkerchiefs have become over time the greatest symbol of this procession. In the hands of the pilgrims, they are part of the transforming experience of the pilgrimage, an object that wipes away tears and helps with the festive farewell.
These are joined by the chant of the “Farewell to Fatima” or “Final Farewell”, as it was originally dubbed in 1934. Melancholy in tone, it is not a gloomy farewell, but a truly prayerful cry:
“A final prayer
As I leave you, Mother of God
Live always in my soul this immortal cry:
O Fatima, farewell.
Virgin Mother, farewell!”
